This JMVFH special edition, guest edited by subject matter expert Dr. Maya Eichler, highlighted emerging research, trends, and future directions in the mainstreaming of sex and gender in military, Veteran, and family health research. Among the most popular JMVFH issues ever, content in this special edition was downloaded 13,471 times. Articles in the edition will help advance analysis in this research field and examine implications for policy and practice in these communities.

Chronic pain: The Canadian Armed Forces members and Veterans mental health follow-up survey
With an Altmetric score of 144, this article was the highest rated JMVFH publication in 2021 and is among the top 5% of all research outputs scored by Altmetric. Chronic pain is an understudied area of research among military members and Veterans. This article explored chronic pain in the military population and examined differences in chronic pain conditions between serving members and Veterans. Notably, it found the onset of chronic pain conditions among Veterans most often occurred while members were still serving in the military.
